Bill Powell isn’t a household name but the man touched many lives during his 93 years of life. Powell, who received numerous awards for his work in the golf world, is most well-known for being the first African American to own a golf course.

The golf course, Clearview Golf Club, not only helped take down racial barriers, it also catered to youth leagues. Powell built Clearview Golf Club with his own hard work and opened its doors in 1948. It took him about two years to turn the area from dairy land to a golf course.

Powell is also the father to Renee Powell, who was one of the first black players on the LPGA Tour.

“Bill Powell will forever be one of golf’s most unforgettable American heroes. Bill made us appreciate the game and each other that much more by his gentle, yet firm example,” said Jim Remy, president of the PGA of America.

Powell played football and golf during high school. During World War II, he served in the Air Force. To build Clearview Golf Club, he took loans from two African American doctors and his brother. He became the owner of the golf course after paying back each of the three individuals.

Powell died on Thursday in Canton, Ohio after suffering a stroke.
