Jim Thorpe, a professional golfer who has 13 wins on the Champions Tour, has been sentenced to one-year in prison due to unpaid taxes. Prosecutors say Thorpe owed more than million in unpaid taxes between to 2002 and 2004. In addition to the prison time, Thorpe will have to pay the taxes, do community service and go on probation when released.
The 60-year-old won three times on the PGA Tour — twice in 1985 and once in 1986. On the Champions Tour, Thorpe last two wins were the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2006 and 2007.
Though Thorpe has many people singing his praises for his work in the community and with his church, the golfer took the blame for his legal woes.
Said Thorpe: “I’ve definitely made some mistakes. It was my fault.”
The PGA released a press statement regarding Thorpe: “While it is unfortunate and regrettable that this is the final resolution, Jim has taken responsibility for his actions and has expressed his remorse.”
It’s unknown whether or not Thorpe will return to golf once he is released.
